Project Narrative

One of Shanghai’s most beloved greenspaces, Fuxing Park is located in the heart of the city’s Former French Concession. First established in 1907, WAA was commissioned to rehabilitate the park for its 100 year anniversary.

Drawing inspiration from the traditional French-style of the park, the design team poured over dozens of old plans and photographs in order to recapture its former glory and, concurrently, carry it forward into the 21st century. New ideas and contemporary programs were introduced alongside the restoration of historic elements such as the Rose Garden, Parterre, Great Lawn and Fountain. The Park’s historic Chinese Garden was preserved and enhanced according to traditional Chinese garden design principles, thereby exemplifying the strong ties between Western and Chinese cultures in Shanghai.
